New Year means Americans abroad must request new absentee ballots
It’s another year, and so another reminder for Americans living abroad to request their absentee ballots for the U.S. elections in 2024.
If you are an American citizen, you must continue to file your taxes in the U.S. regardless of where you live or what you do. Of course, there are laws which can reduce your tax burden – such as the double taxation treaty between the U.S. and Germany.
Along with your requirement to pay taxes is the ongoing right to vote in U.S. elections, regardless of where you are living, even if you live outside the U.S. You can register to vote in U.S. elections and request an absentee ballot to be delivered to your address overseas.
What many Americans overseas may not know, is that in most states a voter living overseas must submit a new absentee ballot request every calendar year. This means, if you’re an American living abroad and you voted in a previous election via absentee ballot, you still need to request a new absentee ballot for this year’s elections.
